Let's Shine

“Let's shine!” was chosen as the theme of St. Peter's 100th Anniversary Appeal based on Matthew 5:16:

Let your light so shine before people
that they will see the good things you do
and praise God in heaven.

Begun as a mission church for the northwestern end of Lancaster city, St. Peter's UCC was birthed from St. Stephen's Church, made up mostly of Franklin and Marshall College faculty families. The new congregation of just 12 members began worshipping in the Lancaster Seminary chapel on June 17, 1906. In that first year, the congregation more than doubled, adding 18 members by the time the charter was issued on August 13, 1907.

In 1909, members settled on the corner of College and Buchanan Avenues as the site for St. Peter's church. It took more than 15 years to erect a building. Ground was broken October 25, 1925 and the original church building was dedicated on October 17, 1926. A new sanctuary and fellowship hall were added and dedicated on November 21, 1954.

As we began celebrating our first 100 years in 2006, we renewed our commitment to serving the community of Lancaster and beyond with the remodeling of our facilities, making them accessible, functional, and welcoming. We have created new church offices, meeting rooms, and restrooms. We have equipped our fellowship hall and sanctuary with new sound systems and improved, energy-efficient lighting. We have air-conditioned all areas of the church and installed a central elevator to provide access to all five levels of the church building. Now, we are poised to begin our second century of service.
